Learn Useful Storage Tips
- Plan your storage space
- Donate all items you don't need to a local charity
- Contact your insurance agent about insurance extensions on stored goods
- Inventory your stored items and keep list safely at home or in a safety deposit box
- Place items you need regularly towards the front
- Allow for walking space throughout your unit
- Use pallets (or the like) to keep goods from direct contact with concrete floor (all concrete floors can become cool and damp)
- Cover all items with plastic or other material to protect from dust or moisture
- Use same sized boxes for easy stacking
- Place heavy items in sturdy boxes
- List the contents of each box on all four sides
- Stack lighter boxes on top of heavier boxes
- Fragile items (dishware, curios, mirrors, pictures, etc.) should be wrapped in packing paper, glass crates, or towels, marked 'FRAGILE,' and placed on top of heavier more stable boxes or stacked on end
- Store the most valuable items towards the rear of the unit
- Use Caution: It is Unlawful and unwise to store hazardous, toxic, explosive, corrosive, or combustible materials such as gasoline, solvents, paints, etc.
- Utilize furniture drawers as storage space for fragile and small items (refer to suggestion #13)
- Store miscellaneous garden tools in empty trash cans
- Save space by removing removable legs from tables and chairs
- Save floor space by storing sofas and loveseats on end (refer to suggestion #6)
- Prop all mattresses straight on end with support to insure preservation of shape
- Keep a broom handy to reduce dust build up
- Sweep out unit, remove all items, and return keys to insure deposit refund
